Caibarien is famous for the white sands and beaches that give it its nickname, making it one of the best tropical destinations in the Caribbean.

In this destination guide, you’ll learn more about the history of Caibarien and everything you need to know about visiting this stunning area of Cuba.

About Caibarien

Caibarien is a small fishing town offering a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Founded in 1832, Caibarien has gone from a tiny coastal village to a vibrant community. Although it isn’t known for its tourist attractions, this quiet area is perfect for visitors who want to experience Cuba like a local.

History of Caibarien

Neocolonial era (1902-1959) in Caibarién

According to historians, the name Caibarien comes from the Arawak Cay Barién, presumably an aboriginal town established in the area. This city dates back to the era of the Sabana or Sabaneque chiefdom, and it was initially a ranch in the nearby town of San Juan de los Remedios during colonial times. However, this city was officially established on October 26, 1832.

Caibarien’s growth and development over the years have been quite remarkable. On August 31, 1873, it was granted the title of village, and by 1878, it was already home to several shops, churches, newspapers, and schools. While its population was only 265 in 1841, it has grown exponentially to about 39,000 residents today.

On January 1, 1879, Caibarien’s first town hall was erected. The city became an independent municipality of Remedios, and the first city council was established under Don Hipólito Escobar Martelo.

Despite being on the smaller side, Caibarien has played a significant role in the province of Villa Clara as its main port. Over the years, it has been a leading hub for collecting and distributing goods from Cuba’s agricultural areas, mainly exporting sugarcane, fruit, and tobacco. Unfortunately, many of these industries have fallen to the wayside in recent years.

Things to do in Caibarien

Although this city is off the beaten path, don’t let that fool you! From history and culture to local art and beaches, Caibarien has plenty to do for visitors.

Relax on Cayo Santa Maria

Take a short drive to the nearby island of Cayo Santa Maria one of Cuba’s most beautiful places.
