It\u2019s that time of year when the annual International Jazz Plaza Festival fills theatres, cultural haunts, plazas and garden patios across Cuba. Mark your calendars for January 25th<\/sup> to February 2nd<\/sup>, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year the festival takes over eight venues in Havana<\/a> , venues in Santa Clara<\/a>  in central Cuba<\/a> for the first time, and top spots in Santiago De Cuba<\/a>, the island\u2019s second city in the east of the island. The programme \u2013 marking the 40th<\/sup> anniversary of the festival – has been created by artistic director Roberto Fonseca, an internationally renowned piano player.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s Festival de Jazz Plaza will see more than 200 concerts performed \u2013 of jazz, but this year, rumba, son, danz\u00f3n and ballet are celebrated, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Havana, look forward to the opening concert at the National Theatre \u2013 \u201cHomage to the 80th<\/sup> Anniversary of Frank Fern\u00e1ndez\u201d on the 26th; Fern\u00e1ndez, born in eastern Cuba, is an accomplished pianist.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuban jazz pianist Harold L\u00f3pez-Nussa comes from a talented family of Cuban musicians. They\u2019ll play a concert as a family on Saturday 1st<\/sup> Feb. Roberto Fonseca will play \u2018Homage to Ibrahim Ferrer\u2019 at the National Theatre on February 2nd, in honour of the famous Buena Vista Social Club singer who popularised songs such as the boleros Silencio<\/em> and C\u00f3mo fue<\/em> back in 1997 with the inspiration of Wim Wenders.<\/p>\n\n\n

Other Havana highlights include a concert by Cuban jazz pianist Ern\u00e1n L\u00f3pez-Nussa<\/a>, a Homage to the Tres Cubano by tres specialist Pancho Amat, percussion and piano duo Hermanos Abreu, and Ruly Herrera y Real Project with its Homenaje al Gesi.<\/p>\n\n\n

Don\u2019t miss Drums Havana with Rodney Barreto and Olivier Vald\u00e9s at the National Theatre (after the show, head for a burger at the cool fast-food joint Perro Swing that Vald\u00e9s co-owns in the Vedado neighbourhood), the famous long-standing rousing rumba group Los Mu\u00f1equitos de Matanzas alfresco at the Mella Theatre Gardens on L\u00ednea Street, accomplished pianist Ernesto Oliva at the intimate performance space inside the Museum of Fine Arts in Old Havana, the John Hanrahan Quartet from Chicago, and the talented Cuban-born pianist and composer Dayramir Gonz\u00e1lez.<\/p>\n\n\n

At Karl Marx Theatre, children\u2019s theatre group La Colmenita (Little Beehive) will perform a Homage to Irakere (a Cuban band founded by pianist Chucho Vald\u00e9s), and at the Casa de Cultura, stellar timba talent Havana D\u2019Primera plans to shake up the night on the 2nd.<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staying in Santa Clara? Swing by the Caridad Theatre on the city\u2019s main square, the wonderful cultural space El Mejunje and La Luna Naranja cultural space. Look out for Santa Clara\u2019s Trovuntivitis, Luis Barber\u00eda and Figaro\u2019s Jazz, and Roberto Fonseca who will play the piano at the theatre. At the town\u2019s main square Leoncio Vidal Park, listen to Septeto Santiaguero on Feburary 1st<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Down in Santiago de Cuba, events kick off at the Heredia Theatre with a concert by Stars of Buena Vista. At the Iris Jazz Club, on Plaza de Marte, don\u2019t miss Alejandro Falc\u00f3n and percussionist Ruy L\u00f3pez-Nussa. Roberto Fonseca will also play alfresco in Parque Dolores on January 29th<\/sup>; and on Plaza de Martes on February 1st<\/sup>, listen to a concert commemorating 140 years of the Hermanos Avil\u00e9s orchestra.<\/p>\n\n\n
