Despite often being overlooked in favour of the island’s more famous tourist travel destinations, Santa Clara offers so much to see and do when exploring the city. With deep connections to the Cuban Revolution, it’s stacked with history that took place on its very streets.

More notably, the city has a deep connection to famous revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara, with the city playing host to the pivotal battle of Santa Clara in 1958, where Che saw a crucial victory in the future success of the revolution.

The city has a lively and friendly atmosphere, home to one of the country’s biggest universities, its population of 250,000 makes it one of Cuba’s top five largest cities, providing a more authentic taste of typical Cuban daily life compared to other, more touristy, spots. The city’s blend of historical importance, cultural richness and vibrant local atmosphere make it a fascinating place to visit – so much so that we’ve rounded up the top five must-see attractions when visiting Santa Clara; they’re not to be missed!

Che Guevara Mausoleum

One thing Santa Clara is not short of is history, and a short walk down any of its cobbled streets will reveal why it is known as “Che’s City”. Perhaps the most iconic site in the city, the Che Guevara Mausoleum commemorates the Argentine rebel who rose to prominence as one of the leaders of the 1950’s Cuban revolution.

The site contains a gigantic 22-foot bronze statue of Che that dominates the skyline, with a memorial beneath the statue, as well as a dedicated museum. The museum is open to explore personal belongings of Che, artifacts and historical information about the icon and the revolution. Che’s remains – along with that of 16 of his fellow troops – are laid to rest here in Santa Clara, with an eternal flame lit by Fidel Castro, burning continuously in his memory.

This resting place was chosen in remembrance of the battle won in Santa Clara in 1958, taking back the city and leading to the future victory of the revolution. Many towns and cities in Cuba have dedication to Che Guevara, however this site holds extra significance, with a truly impressive statue and memorial, this is a must-see for anyone wanting to experience the history that led to the Cuba of today. Both the museum and memorial are free to visit and are an absolute must when visiting the city.

Tren Blindado (Armoured Train)

Santa Clara marks the site of the famous 1958 Cuban revolution battle, a significant victory that helped pave the way to revolutionary success in Cuba. The Santa Clara train monument, known as the Monumento al Tren Blindado commemorates the site of the famous derailment of an armoured train carrying government troops and armaments, achieved by a small group of rebels using a bulldozer and Molotov cocktails.

The ‘Attack on the Train’ was a pivotal moment in the history of the revolution, showcasing the strength and determination of the Guerrilla fighters. The remnants of the crash are open to the public, making the site not only a landmark of revolutionary significance, but also a piece of public art. A Collection of tanks, military vehicles and other symbolic pieces are on display making it a visually striking location.

The bulldozer and wrecked railway cars are also available to explore, with the freight carriages filled with historical facts, exhibits and memorabilia which you can step inside to discover. For visitors interested in Cuban culture and revolutionary history, this monument serves up an up-close-and-personal understanding of the events that took place during the battles of the revolution – which is essential for those wanting to discover the roots of modern Cuba.

Teatro la Caridad – The Santa Clara Theatre

One spot which is definitely worth a visit is the historical Santa Clara Theatre. Standing proud in Vidal Park since 1885, the ornate building still displays its beautiful historical architecture both inside and out.

Its beauty stands the test of time; the classic colonial architecture adds to the charming atmosphere of the city, and has been declared a National Monument since 1982. The theatre remains open to the public today with significant theatre companies and many renowned figures in the national art scene performing on its stage.

Performances, concerts and films are all great ways to experience Cuban arts and culture in a truly stunning setting inside the walls of the impressive building. If only to take in the impressive architecture, the Santa Clara Theatre is a must-see when visiting the city – but why not get the full experience with a show or concert? It’s a great opportunity to soak up Cuban culture.

Parque Vidal

For a real feel of the cultural atmosphere in Cuba, a walk through Parque Vidal will immerse you in the heart of the city. One of the nation’s busiest and most vibrant urban spaces, a diverse mixture of cultural and historical significance is felt in this square, a perfect spot to stop and take it all in.

A gathering place for locals and tourists alike, the lively and friendly atmosphere creates a social environment, with many cafes, restaurants, bars and sitting areas with benches creating opportunities to relax and watch the world drift by.

The colonial architecture, cobbled streets and grassy areas provide a welcome, peaceful, retreat from the busier parts of the city, perfect for a leisurely stroll in the pleasant weather. Take a moment to observe El Nino de la bota (Boy with a Boot) statue, a longstanding city symbol, or make your way to the square on a Thursday or Sunday evening to listen to the municipal orchestra play Cuba rhythms into the night – a performance that has been a staple in the city since 1902.

Parque Vidal really is more than just a park, but rather a central point for cultural immersion, historical significance and a social hub to relax and slow the pace. It’s a central hub that offers something for everyone, and a must-see when travelling to Santa Clara.

Loma del Capiro Hill

Last but certainly not least, if you’re keen to soak up some Cuban history while enjoying breathtaking panoramic views of the city, lace up your walking shoes and head for a scenic trek up Loma del Capiro Hill.

The Hill itself is known for its connection to the Cuban revolution, as it was used by Che Guevara and his troops as a hiding and command centre during the revolution. The spot acted as a key part in the planning and organisation of troops during the Armoured Train operation, which would go on to be a significant victory in the revolution.

To celebrate this, atop the hill is a monument representing the defence of the homeland, providing visitors an area in which to reflect on the events of the revolution and its influence on the country today.

The historical significance is not all that’s on offer when climbing the steps to the top of the hill, though. Those making the climb will also be rewarded with stunning panoramic views over the city. A perfect spot to discover the beauty of the city skyline and a great vantage point for photographs. A stunning spot for nature lovers also, the hill itself is often less busy than other areas in the city, making for a peaceful and scenic place to enjoy a more relaxing visit.

Whether it’s the historical significance, the natural beauty, or both, that attracts you to the Loma del Capiro hill, you won’t be disappointed when reaching the top and admiring Santa Clara in all its beauty.

Santa Clara is truly a hidden gem when visiting Cuba.
