When you think of Cuba, what might spring to mind are the white sandy beaches of Varadero, or the cobbled streets lined with colonial architecture and classic cars of Habana, but what Cuba also has to offer are rich biodiverse nature reserves, overflowing with natural beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this in mind, one site not to be missed is Zapata National Park, located in the Zapata Peninsula in southwestern Cuba. This sensational UNESCO Biosphere Reserve covers over 4,000 square kilometres of lush landscape, containing extensive and varied ecosystems such as mangrove forests, seagrass beds, coral reef barriers and underwater canyons, making it one of Cuba\u2019s most ecologically diverse (and fascinating) areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vast ecosystem is home to more than 900 species of flora and over 300 species of birds, making this a dream location for any nature enthusiast or keen birdwatcher to frequent. Pack a pair of binoculars and look to the skies as this birdwatching hotspot is home to the world’s smallest bird, the Cuban Bee Hummingbird, as well as Cuba\u2019s national bird, the Tocororo, the Cuban Pygmy Owl, Cuban Parrot and hundreds more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, don\u2019t forget to look down, too, as you\u2019ll likely want to look out for Cuban crocodiles, which enjoy the Zapata swamps, as well as the rare reptiles and amphibians that call the park home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
