Commissioned by Cuban President Gerado Machado, it was built between 1926 and 1929 and remains today as one of the most awe-inspiring pieces of architecture to grace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/destinations\/havana-holidays\">the capital of Havana<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The enormous dome protruding from this intricate building dominates the cityscape and has become an iconic landmark of Havana, much like the cigar and classic Cadillac. El Capitolio has a rich and interesting history, so we thought we\u2019d highlight a few facts about how it achieved its reputable status\u2026<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>El Capitolio: 5,000 people to build<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p>We\u2019ve already established that the El Capitolio building took three years to build from 1926 &#8211; 1929, which may sound like a long time, but at a scale of 681 x 300 ft, this was a remarkably speedy achievement. It had a good run, until it was overtaken by the radio and television network building FOCSA in the 1950\u2019s \u2013 which still stands as the tallest in Havana today.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" class=\"wp-image-797\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mon3-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mon3-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mon3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mon3-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mon3-750x501.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mon3.jpg 1033w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It houses the world\u2019s third-largest indoor statue\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p>Inside the \u201cSalon de los Pasos Perdidos\u201d (Room of the Lost Steps) stands proud the 17.6-metre-tall La Republica statue. Symbolising the mythic Guardian of Work and Virtue, this ornate bronze woman statue is covered from head to toe in gold leaf, and weighing in at 30 tonnes \u2013 it\u2019s a sight to behold. Her size is only surpassed by Washington DC\u2019s Abraham Lincoln statue and Japan\u2019s Buddha statue in Nara. Now that\u2019s impressive!<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"446\" class=\"wp-image-798\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mon4.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mon4.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mon4-300x131.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mon4-768x335.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mon4-750x327.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the El Capitolio used for?<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p>Formerly, El Capitolio was the seat of the Cuban Congress, but when it was abolished in 1959 a new government building was constructed in \u201cPlaza de la Revolucion\u201d (Revolution Square). Instead of letting the expansive space inside El Capitolio go to waste, in 1962 it was dedicated to the Cuban Academy of Sciences and the National Library of Science and Technology until 2013. Between 2013 and 2019 the building underwent huge refurbishment and re-opened in time for Havana\u2019s 500<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary, opening to the public for guided tours.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"993\" height=\"662\" class=\"wp-image-799\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mondaycar.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mondaycar.jpg 993w, https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mondaycar-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mondaycar-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lovecuba.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mondaycar-750x500.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 993px) 100vw, 993px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It\u2019s not a copy of the Capitol in Washington DC<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p>Despite the rumours and uncanny resemblance, El Capitolio is not (we repeat, <em>not<\/em>) a replica of the US Capitol building in Washington DC, USA. In fact, it\u2019s modelled on the Pantheon in Paris. If you look closely enough, many of El Capitolio\u2019s ornate details are unique in that they directly relate to Cuba \u2013 the main entrance doors, for example, are made of ornamented bronze and depict real scenes from Cuban history.
