The wonderful thing about Cuba is that its diverse landscapes – which embody a cocktail of verdant countryside scenes, postcard-worthy beaches and energetic cities – allow tourists to dictate the overall pace of their visit.
From the fast-paced capital lined with colourful vintage cars, authentic cigar shops, and atmospheric salsa bars to laid-back beach life across the regions of Varadero, Cayo Coco, Playa Giron and the rolling hills of Vinales – there’s something for everyone.
In this article, however, we’re focusing on the more expeditious side of the island. So, if you like to live life in the fast lane, we’ve rounded up 10 of the most adventurous things to do in Cuba – each sure to provide a memorable experience.
Time to buckle up, thrill-seekers…
1. Scuba Dive in the Bay of Pigs

Snorkels at the ready. Cuba is home to some of the best diving spots in the Caribbean, and the Bay of Pigs is a certified tick off the bucket-list for underwater enthusiasts. With its pristine waters, vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life, this historic bay offers world-class shore diving. You don’t have to be a seasoned diver to enjoy this spot either, as there are several diving shops available here that offer both training and guided dives for beginners.
2. Hike to the Summit of Pico Turquino

If you’re an avid hiker, a trek to Pico Turquino (Cuba’s highest peak standing at 1,974m) is the ultimate challenge. Nestled in the stunning Sierra Maestra Mountains, this demanding trek takes you through dense forests, past hidden waterfalls, and through verdant flora and fauna to reach the summit. History buffs will be in their element, as you can even swing by the historic hideout of Fidel Castro and the Cuban revolutionaries en route. If the scenic journey isn’t worth it enough, at the top you’ll be met by the most beautiful views.
3. Swim in the Cave Pools of Cueva de Saturno

Consider yourself a water baby? There are plenty of unique swimming experiences to be had across the island, a favourite of ours being Cueva de Saturno. This stunning underground is situated near the popular tourist spot of Varadero and boasts crystal-clear waters, dramatic stalactites and an eerie, yet breathtaking, atmosphere. This natural swimming hole is perfect for leisurely snorkelling or adrenaline-inducing cliff jumping – the choice is yours…
4. Explore Vinales Valley on Horseback

Crowned as one of the most beautiful countryside regions in Cuba, Viñales Valley is famous for its lush landscapes, impossibly green tobacco fields and limestone hills – known as mogotes. One of the best ways to explore this gorgeous spot is via horseback, where you can leisurely trot through the many farms and fields, soaking up the surroundings as you go. If you’re after something a little more active, why not cycle through the area? The terrain is relatively flat, plus, there are plenty of viewpoints to rest your wheels at and admire the view (with a mojito in hand, preferably).
5. Get your dancing shoes on in Santiago De Cuba

There’s something truly mesmerising about the rhythmic pulse of Santería drums, isn’t there? Established in the 1960s, Folklórico groups have flourished – and we must count ourselves lucky – as while most Afro-Cuban religious ceremonies are reserved for initiates, the vibrant drumming and dances of folklóricooffer an immersive experience for all. Head to Santiago De Cuba where your ears (and feet) will thank you, since this region plays host to many authentic, cultural performances like this one.
6. Zip-line over the Las Terrazas Eco-Reserve

Hold onto your hat, because this adrenaline-pumping zip-line means business. This sensational eco-reserve nestled in the Sierra del Rosario mountains was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1984, and is Cuba’s best kept secret. Those eager to get a bird’s eye view can strap in and soar over the forests’ treetops, admiring breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Activities including hiking, natural pool swimming, and birdwatching are also available at the reserve, allowing guests to combine action and adventure with appreciation of the area’s natural beauty.
7. Ride through the countryside in a classic convertible

While many tourists choose to tour the bustling streets of Havana in a vintage car, taking a road trip through the countryside in a classic convertible is a whole new adventure. Cruise along the coastline, explore hidden villages, and discover off-the-beaten-track spots that most visitors may miss – all the while looking pretty darn cool…
8. Explore the caves of Cayo Jutias by Kayak

For a truly unique adventure, grab an oar and paddle along the coastline of Cayo Jutias in a kayak. One of the main keys that make up the Los Colorados archipelago, this jungle bolt hole is blessed with coral-white sands and turquoise waters to swim, snorkel, and get sporty on. This is a peaceful yet thrilling experience as you navigate through sea tunnels and secluded coves, watching out for colourful marine life as you go – especially since one of the beaches in this area is known for its beautiful starfish.
9. Enjoy Cuba’s calendar of festivals

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in the heart and soul of this country is through its lively festivals. A destination of deep-rooted history, rich culture, rhythmic music, and dance traditions, celebrations take center stage across the island. And the best part? There’s a festival for everyone – from the electrifying Carnaval de la Habana and Festival Internacional Jazz Plaza to the fiery Festival of Fire, prestigious Havana Film Festival, vibrant Carnaval de Santiago de Cuba, and beyond.
10. Brave the skies and go paragliding

So you’ve tried snorkelling, scuba diving, hiking and cycling, what’s left? Well, the only way is up. Destinations including Isla de la Juventud, Santiago de Cuba, and Villa Clara are a few of the best places to paraglide according to locals. With a selection of flying sites and, let’s face it, sensational backdrops anywhere you go – it’s an experience sure to take you on a rollercoaster of emotions.
