Calling all adventure seekers and underwater explorers, if you’re looking for stunning natural caves, cenotes of crystal-clear fresh water and schools of colourful tropical fish to gaze upon, then look no further! Cuba has a variety of caves and cenotes waiting to be explored.

All explorers, from beginners and cave divers looking for a fresh adventure, to seasoned professionals with experience exploring the depths of the crystal blue, will find uncovering the natural beauty in Cuba’s caves a truly unforgettable experience.

So, without further ado, grab your snorkel, try not to fall over as you put on your flippers, and dive head first into the underwater world of tropical fish and aquatic beauty.

Cueva Saturno

Cave Diving in Cuba - Cueva Saturno

Located only 12km from the city of Matanzas is the Cueva Saturno (Saturno Cave). This deep, enchanting cave is full of large natural stalactites and stalagmites (suggesting that this stunning cave did not always contain water) however, today the cave is inhabited by a twinkling freshwater lake – the perfect place to take a refreshing dip. But don’t forget your snorkel! As this freshwater lake is home to an array of tropical fish, underwater species and beautiful natural wildlife waiting to be discovered. The surrounding cave area also has a place you can rest for refreshments as you take in the surrounding landscape. A swimming experience not to be missed!

Bay of Pigs

Cave Diving in Cuba - Bay of Pigs

One of the most famous destinations for diving and snorkelling in Cuba is the Bay of Pigs. Popular for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant and colourful fish and many diving spots, the Bay of Pigs is a must visit for anyone looking to do some serious exploring in the tropical sun. For easy access and fun diving for all abilities, be sure to include the Bay of Pigs in your travel itinerary. The bay offers a host of diving spots, a few if which includes:

  • The Cueva de los Peces: Nested halfway between Playa Larga and Playa Girón, the Cueva de los Peces offers a 70m deep cenote, hugely popular for swimming and diving. A naturally charming setting, this freshwater cave is a great find for those seeking to spot some wild tropical fish. Those feeling brave can descend into the depths and explore using on-site snorkelling and diving gear for hire. Or, take a break from underwater exploration by catching some rays in the provided hammocks that surround the crystal-clear pool, with only a short walk to the beach opposite. A full day of exploring awaits at the Cueva de los Peces.

  • Punta Perdiz: An International Diving Centre where you can practise diving and snorkelling along the coast. With cenotes full of tropical fish, corals and underwater caves to explore, this site is peppered with unforgettable natural beauty waiting to be explored. The depths accessible to explore range from 10m to a whopping 300m, meaning there is so much to see – and with the crystal-clear waters at Punta Perdiz, you’ll be able to see it all!

If you’re looking for a more exclusive experience with the excitement of big fish and undiscovered beauty on more remote reefs, check out one of Cuba’s more premier destinations:

Jardines de la Reina Diving

Cave Diving in Cuba - Jardines de la Reina Diving

Feeling brave? The Jardines de la Reina diving spot not only showcases beautiful reefs and corals, but is also home to many reef sharks. A protected ecosystem with complete fishing bans and restricted visitor numbers, this site is thought to resemble the natural environment of Christopher Columbus times. Utterly breathtaking ecosystems and marine wildlife are waiting to be explored in this premier diving location, creating memories to last a lifetime.
