If you’re looking for unique architecture and sightseeing during your visit to Havana, Cuba, be sure to explore the incredible Colon Cemetery. As one of the best architectural cemeteries in the world, this is an excellent spot to visit on a history tour. Keep reading to learn more about this iconic cemetery.

About Cuba’s Colon Cemetery

About Cuba’s Colon Cemetery

This historic site, also known as El Cementerio de Cristóbal Colón or ‘La Necrópolis de Cristóbal Colón’, is one of the most important cemeteries in the world and the second most important in Latin America (in historical and architectural terms), only surpassed by La Recoleta in Buenos Aires.

Founded in 1876, in the Vedado neighbourhood of Havana, the cemetery covers an impressive area of 49.57 hectares and contains over 800,000 graves with more than 1 million interments.

The Colon Cemetery is also an open-air museum featuring over 500 major mausoleums, chapels, and 53,000 monuments made of Carrara marble and high-end Italian, Swedish, and Spanish granite. The architectural styles range from Renaissance and Neoclassical to Art Deco.

During your visit, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the cemetery’s timeline and symbolism. The memorials erected for the deceased tell stories about their values, philosophies, religion, ethnicity, social memberships, occupations, education, level of wealth, and thoughts on the afterlife.

Touring the Colon Cemetery

There are several ways to tour the Colon Cemetery. You can take a free guided tour or embark on a tour around the cemetery as a part of your package holiday to Havana. Along the way, you can admire the magnificent mausoleums and learn about the fascinating stories behind them. You’ll also discover famous love stories, such as the one involving Amelia Goyri, known as “La Milagrosa,” whose grave is adorned with fresh flowers daily.

Monuments at the Colon Cemetery

Monuments at the Colon Cemetery

This cemetery has several notable sites – a few highlights are listed below!

The Pantheon of Major Máximo Gómez Báez: This monument honours an outstanding military leader who taught a generation of Cuban military experts.

The Monument to the Fire Brigade: This site honours 38 firefighters who died while serving their community.

The Mausoleum of Catalina Lasa: In the early 1900s, Catalina Lasa fell in love with someone other than her husband, forcing the couple to flee to France. When she passed away, her lover designed this magnificent tomb in her memory.

The Monument to the Medical Students: This monument was constructed as a declaration of the innocence of eight medical students who were accused of desecrating a Spanish journalist’s tomb.

The Christ of the Ascension: This site depicts a moving and brilliant representation of Jesus.

The Tomb of Domino: As the name implies, this tomb was marked by a large domino tile on the top.
