Read on to learn more about Cuba’s most famous artists and their exhibitions.

Wilfredo Lam

Lam is often considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, known for his fusion of African, Caribbean, and Western artistic influences. Born in 1902, Lam was predominantly a painter, but closer to his death in 1982, he also experimented with sculpting, printmaking, and ceramics. Throughout his works, you’ll notice themes of Afro-Cuban culture, spirituality, and social themes.

His art has been featured in numerous exhibitions both in Cuba and internationally. The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana, or the National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana, frequently showcases his works, providing visitors with insights into his unique artistic vision.

You can find more of his work at the Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center. Located in Havana, this centre promotes contemporary art in Cuba. It also hosts exhibitions by both Cuban and international artists, offering a platform for diverse artistic expressions. The centre’s collections often reflect the evolving nature of Cuban art, addressing contemporary topics while honouring the legacy of the country’s creative pioneers.

Carlos Garaicoa

Carlos Garaicoa is known for his multimedia works exploring themes of urbanism, architecture, and memory. His art often incorporates photography, sculpture, and installation elements to create powerful commentaries on the urban environment.

Born in Havana in 1967, Garaicoa began his career in the 1990s with his first piece, Suceso en Aguiar 609, which took place in his own apartment building. Since then, his exhibitions have been featured in galleries and museums across Cuba, as well as in international art museums like the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.

Often referred to as the “Picasso of the Caribbean,” José Fuster is a Cuban artist renowned for his colourful and whimsical paintings, ceramics, drawings, engravings, and graphic designs.

He transformed his neighbourhood, Jaimanitas, located on the outskirts of Havana, into a living art installation by adorning houses, streets, and public spaces with his murals and domes.

While Fuster’s work is more site-specific, his neighbourhood itself has become a unique artistic attraction and an ongoing exhibition of his vibrant creations. His collections are also at Havana’s Castillo de la Real Fuerza and the National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana.

Born in 1944, Manuel Mendive is a renowned Afro-Cuban artist whose work often draws from the rich cultural heritage of Cuba’s African diaspora. His art combines painting, sculpture, and performance to explore themes of spirituality, identity, and nature. Mendive’s first-ever exhibit was held at the Center of Art in Havana, and his exhibitions continue to provide audiences with a deep connection to the cultural roots of Cuba and its Afro-Cuban traditions.

Chartrand’s artistic versatility encompassed painting, illustration, and even photography. His profound connection to Cuba’s rich cultural tapestry is evident in his depictions of local landscapes, folklore, and everyday life. Since his death, his exhibitions have been showcased in numerous galleries around Cuba, the United States, and Europe.Other Art Museums and Galleries in Cuba
