The History of The Race

Did you know that the marathon is named as such because it was inspired by the tales of the ancient Maraton’s Battle? The myth is that a Greek soldier named Filipides died after running at least 200km from Maraton to Sparta in order to inform them that Persians were in their territory. Since then the marathons that we all know, are ran and enjoyed all over the world.

So, when it comes to Havana’s most impressive Marathon, it’s interesting to know that it is also steeped in history.

At the marathon, Cuban Andarín Carvajal is celebrated each year. Born in 1875, he is known for his running ability. He worked as a mailman and was always out and about promoting products. He was so talented that he entered the Olympic Games, which was not easy for a non-trained Cuban to do. He travelled with zero money to the US and even walked from New Orleans to St.Louis to compete.

When he was running the race, he was leading for a long time, however, hunger took over, after not eating for 40 hours, he stopped to eat some apples. He ended up finishing in 4th place. At the Marabana marathon, his resilience and determination are celebrated each year.

What You’ll See on The Marabana Marathon Route

In order to miss the intense Cuban heat, the race will kick off at 6 am from Central Park. This race is perfect for those who want to explore the 400 years of history and architecture in the city during their run. The route will take runners past the Malecon waterfront which overlooks the Havana Bay, the old stately homes and the Old Town with views of the stunning colonial buildings. You’ll pass the Capitolio, the Cabana fortress and the Harbour, the Revolution Square, the Parque Central and the world-famous Hotel Nacional.

Some Tips For Those Running The Race

  • Toilet roll is in short supply during the race. It’s worth taking some spare change in your running bag or even some spare sheets. You’ll either be able to buy some from one of the toilet attendants or even buy something in a local bar or restaurant in exchange for their facilities.
  • Know your distance. The distances are in kilometres. So make sure you understand what pace you need to go at. You will receive a wristband that says either 42k, 21k, 10k or 5k.
  • Download music ahead of time. The WiFi is sparse so make sure you download any playlists beforehand so that you’re not slowed down.
  • There are some steep hills if you’re doing the full marathon.
  • Cooldown at the Puntos Oasis. There are 11 stations where volunteers provide water, ice cubes and opportunities for overheated runners to cool down – with a water shower.
  • Bring a pair of trainers to give away. With running shoes in short supply in Cuba, it is common for runners to give away their shoes at the end of the race.

Some Health Advice for Marabana Runners

There will be an experienced medical crew on site but it’s good to prepare yourself beforehand to ensure a comfortable and safe run.

  • Research the heat and humidity to prepare for it.
  • Drink a lot of water before the race.
  • Eat a meal full of carbohydrates beforehand.
  • Don’t drink alcohol the day before.

Explore Havana Whilst You’re Here

Before and after the race, you should take the time to explore the stunning and vibrant Havana. The city is bursting with colour, history and culture. And particularly during the marathon, when locals are expecting an influx of visitors, there will be an exciting buzz in the air. Whilst you are visiting Havana, visit the stunning art galleries and museums and if your feet can handle it, join in some salsa.
