When you think of Cuba, what might spring to mind are the white sandy beaches of Varadero, or the cobbled streets lined with colonial architecture and classic cars of Habana, but what Cuba also has to offer are rich biodiverse nature reserves, overflowing with natural beauty.
With this in mind, one site not to be missed is Zapata National Park, located in the Zapata Peninsula in southwestern Cuba. This sensational UNESCO Biosphere Reserve covers over 4,000 square kilometres of lush landscape, containing extensive and varied ecosystems such as mangrove forests, seagrass beds, coral reef barriers and underwater canyons, making it one of Cuba’s most ecologically diverse (and fascinating) areas.
The vast ecosystem is home to more than 900 species of flora and over 300 species of birds, making this a dream location for any nature enthusiast or keen birdwatcher to frequent. Pack a pair of binoculars and look to the skies as this birdwatching hotspot is home to the world’s smallest bird, the Cuban Bee Hummingbird, as well as Cuba’s national bird, the Tocororo, the Cuban Pygmy Owl, Cuban Parrot and hundreds more.
However, don’t forget to look down, too, as you’ll likely want to look out for Cuban crocodiles, which enjoy the Zapata swamps, as well as the rare reptiles and amphibians that call the park home.
With so much to see and explore it can seem an impossible task to take in all the wonders on offer, but with a variety of tours on both land and water available, the friendly guides can help you make the most of your visit.
So, what’s available? With kayaking tours, hiking tours, biking tours and photography tours all on offer for guests to immerse themselves in, there’s ample opportunity to discover the parks wildlife, whether it’s a daytime adventure to spot the crocodiles, or a night time hunt to seek out the nocturnal lizards that venture through the dark. And when you fancy a break from the ecosystem and nature reserve exploration, you can take a refreshing dip in the clear waters of Playa Giron and Playa Larga, where from the beach snorkelling is available to continue your adventure.

Equally, if learning about the history of the island is on your to-do list, discover all there is to know about the history of the famous Bay of Pigs invasion, with actual on-site war memorials to marvel over.
Whatever your passion, the Zapata offers a truly unique Cuban experience. We recommend planning your visit during the dry season of November to April to get the most out of your stay, with many accommodation options, both in on-site eco-lodges or small hotels in the nearby Playa Larga area, for you to choose from.
Natural beauty and rich ecosystems are waiting to be discovered and explored in the Zapata National Park, just remember to bring some binoculars, insect repellent and a sense of adventure!
