Cash is king in Cuba; credit and debit card usage in Cuba is still limited, and not all cards are accepted. Cards issued by U.S. banks do not work due to ongoing sanctions. However, Visa and some Mastercard-branded cards from non-U.S. banks may work at ATMs and in larger hotels or resorts, it’s best to check with your card issuer before travelling. Still, it’s best to bring enough cash (in U.S dollars or Euros) to exchange, especially for travel outside major tourist areas. ATMs can be unreliable, and many places are cash-only.
