Do ATM's work in Cuba?

Do ATM’s work in Cuba?

Do ATMs work in Cuba?

Yes, ATMs (known locally as Cajeros) work in major tourist areas like Havana, Varadero and Trinidad. However they are few and far between and you will often find that they have run out of cash, or power. You must always bring enough cash with you to Cuba to cover your spending locally as you cannot rely on the local ATMs.

  • Currency: ATMs in Cuba only dispense Cuban Pesos (CUP). You cannot withdraw in other currencies such as British pounds, US Dollars or Euro’s.
  • Exchange Rate: You will receive the official government rate, which is often much lower than the value you get by bringing physical cash.

Do UK Travel Cards (Monzo, Revolut, Starling) work in Cuba?

  • Revolut: Does not work in Cuba at the minute due to its processing banks links to US regulations.
  • Monzo and Starling: No, while they are UK based, their payment processors block Cuban transactions to avoid US sanctions.
  • Chase UK: Will not work either, as it is a subsidiary of a US bank (JP Morgan).
  • Our advice: Never rely on digital only bank cards. Bring a traditional, physical, high street bank card. Always check with your bank/card issuer if your card will be accepted in Cuba. Credit cards are not accepted in restaurant and bars, and are only accepted in major hotels.

What is an MLC card and do I need one?

  • An MLC (Monde Liberemente Convertible) card, is a “virtual” currency used in government run stores to buy goods like Cigars and Rum.
  • If your usual credit card works in Cuba, then you can use it to pay in these shops.
  • If your card doesn’t work, you can buy a pre-paid MLC card at the airport or CADEECAs (official money exchange houses).
  • Warning: Any left over balance on an MLC card is non-refundable. If you chose to get one only load what you plan to spend.

What is the best currency to take to Cuba from the UK?

  • The best currencies to carry in Cuba in 2026 are US Dollar ($) and Euros (€).
  • Why not Sterling? While you can exchange British pounds at official exchange houses (CADEECAs), they will not be excepted in any restaurants, shops or bars.
  • Cash is King in Cuba: at least 90% of your spending in Cuba, taxis, local meals and tips, will be in cash.

Top 5 Money rules for your 2026 Cuba Trip:

  1. Bring all the cash you think you’ll need, then add 20%.
  2. Bring pristine notes. Cuban banks, and local restaurants and shops may reject notes that have small tears, ink marks or heavy folds.
  3. Don’t exchange everything at the airport. Exchange your cash into US dollars or Euros, before you arrive in Cuba to make sure that you get the best exchange rates.
  4. Change small amounts of your cash into Cuban pesos (CUP) for small purchases.
  5. Make sure you bring small denominations, you will struggle to get change for large notes.
