Cuba is a country known for its vibrant culture, postcard-worthy beaches, and rich history. From the colonial streets of bustling Havana to lounging on the shelving white sands of Varadero, it’s a sought-after holiday destination for a reason. But what many people may not know, is that Cuba also boasts some of the most spectacular golf courses – and we want to shine a spotlight on one of the best.
Located on the Hicacos Peninsula, the Varadero Golf Club is a beautiful 18-hole course that winds through lush tropical foliage and offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea as you go. So, don’t forget your clubs…
The Varadero Golf Club
Designed by architect Les Furber, President of the Canadian Golf Design Services Ltd (GDS), in the style of Robert Trent (Jr.), the course was originally built in 1931 but was soon destroyed by a hurricane in 1933. It was later rebuilt by designer Sim Cuthrie, yet featured only 9 holes, as the course needed to be refilled with more natural soil. Then, between April – December 1934 the course received over $10,000 worth of soil and was fully operational with the completed 18-holes by 1936.
Stretching across 3.5km and nestled between the popular hotels of Be Live Adults Only Los Cactus, Be Live Experience Tuxpan, Iberostar Bella Costa, Meliá Las Americas Golf & Suites Resort, Meliá Varadero, Sol Club Palmeras and Sol Club Sirenas-Coral – golfers won’t be short of luxury hotels to stay at! Combining three styles of golf architecture including Classic Design, Challenging Design, and Links Design, this beautiful course offers visitors the perfect combination of stunning natural scenery amid picturesque lakes, swaying palm trees, and undulating fairways, with world-class golf facilities to match.

Whether you’re a keen golfer or new to the game, this course provides a fair challenge for golfers of all levels, complete with strategically placed bunkers and water hazards that require accurate shot-making and strategic play. Holes one to nine can be considered as slightly easier (ideal for newbies) whilst holes 10-18 are individually complex, allowing more advanced golfers to play out technical elements of the game surrounded by the natural beauty of Varadero.

Once you’ve made it to the 18th hole, you can head back to the sophisticated Club House, also known as Xanadú Mansion. Declared one of the Seven Wonders of Architectural Works in Matanzas in 2002 and National Monument of First Conservation Degree in 2013, this building is a sight to behold. With superb accommodation, exquisite food, a lively bar, and breathtaking panoramic views over the golf course and twinkling sea, it makes for the perfect pit stop during your game.

The Golf Academy
If you’re a golfing beginner looking to hone a few key skills, the Golf Academy is the perfect place to practice your swing. Talented golf instructors can provide individual or group lessons for all ages and abilities on its practice areas (300 meters for long games, two putting greens, one shipping green, two bunkers) available from 9am.
