The Hemingway International Billfishing Tournament in Cuba, named after the legendary writer, has become a symbol of Cuba’s rich maritime heritage, hosting fishermen from around the world every year.

The tournament is not just a sporting event; it’s a celebration of Cuban culture, reflecting the island’s love for the sea, its literary history, and its vibrant traditions.

Keep reading to learn more about this iconic fishing tournament and everything you need to know before visiting.

The History of Hemingway’s Fishing Tournament

Ernest Hemingway, the Nobel Prize-winning author, was an avid fisherman. His passion for the sea and the thrill of the catch inspired some of his most famous works, including The Old Man and the Sea. Hemingway’s love for fishing found a home in Cuba, where he lived for over two decades.

Established in 1950, the tournament was initially considered just a friendly competition among fishermen. And it even included Hemingway himself.

It started when 36 fishing boats from Havana sailed through the Castillo del Morro Channel. One of these, the Pilar, was Hemingway’s boat – he was representing the International Yacht Club of Havana.

Some of the fishermen insisted on naming the tournament after Hemingway, honouring his love of big game fishing. Not only did Hemingway consent to the name, but he also won the tournament for the first three years.

Since the 1950s, this competition has evolved into a prestigious event, preserving Hemingway’s legacy, promoting sustainable fishing practices, and attracting participants from all over. In fact, this tournament is currently considered to be one of the oldest big game saltwater tournaments in the world.

During this tag-and-release competition, you’ll see avid fishermen pursuing deep-sea fish, like marlin, tuna, and wahoo, while using a 50-pound fishing line.
