Held each year from December 16th to 24th, Parrandas de Remedios is part electrifying street party, part spirited competition – and full-blown festive chaos in the very best way. What began in the 18th century as a lightbulb moment by local priest, Father Francisco Vigilde Quiñones, to rouse sleepy churchgoers with noisy parades ahead of midnight mass, has since escalated into one of Cuba’s most spectacular cultural celebrations. The town divides into two neighbourhoods – El Carmen and San Salvador – who go head-to-head with elaborate floats, conga lines, light shows, drumming, and the kind of fireworks displays that rival New Year’s Eve in major cities. What makes Parrandas so special isn’t just the scale, though – it’s the heart. Locals spend months preparing intricate costumes and structures ahead of the event, and the energy is contagious.
