Havana destination Guide

Cuba’s iconic capital of Havana is instantly recognisable. To many, this charming city steeped in rich history and culture is trapped in a time warp, where Classic American cars like Buicks, Cadillacs and Chevrolets line the cobbled streets, and

The city of Havana

Spanish colonial style buildings date back to the 16th century. To others, it’s a gateway to the Latin world, full of colour and vibrancy. Havana is one of the last places on earth that you can describe as truly unique; its diversity allows you to experience UNESCO-listed Old Towns, a vibrant art scene, incredible live music and exotic salsa dancing sure to bring the atmosphere day and night.

You’ll immediately notice the blend of old and new in this city, where rustic cathedrals rub shoulders with modern shopping malls and traditional cigar shops neighbour stylish bars. There’s more to the city than its grand architecture though, with spectacular beaches to soak up the sun and sip cocktails on, too. Thanks to its position close to the equator, you can visit Cuba’s beaches all-year-round, a few of our favourites near the city being Santa María del Mar, Playa Boca Ciega and Playa Guanabo – a local hangout.

What to see & do in Havana

There’s an abundance of things to see and do in this exciting city, with something suitable for all ages. You can’t visit Old Havana without taking a Classic 1950s car for a spin; one of the results of Cuba’s communist government was the inability to import new cars, so you’ll see a variety of vintage motors still dotting the streets today. Hop into the passenger seat of a vintage car and enjoy a guided tour around the city where you can admire the sights, learn some history and even stop for a cocktail (it’s a good job you won’t be driving!).

Food & Drink in Havana

Speaking of cocktails, novel fans (or not) can grab a drink at one of Ernest Hemingway’s favourite haunts, La Bodeguita and La Floridita, a couple of the many places you’d find the American Novelist when not relaxing at his home located just outside of Havana (which you can also tour). Explore a little further and leave the hustle and bustle of the city centre as you enjoy a leisurely walk along the Malecón – a sea wall that runs for 8km across the length of the city. Not only will you be thankful for the breeze, but you’ll discover how much of the city has changed as you travel through it.

For foodies after an authentic Havana experience, book a table at one of the Paladar’s sprinkled across the city. Meaning ‘palate’, these restaurants signal the country’s commitment to producing a lasting impression on your dining experience – so you’ll receive exceptional service, fabulous local food and often a cigar and whisky from the waiter to wrap up your meal. As the evening draws in, you’ll find plenty of live music and exotic salsa shows to dance the night away to.
