When visiting Cuba, Havana often graces the top of the itinerary – and for good reason. This intoxicating city awakens the senses, blending rich history, vibrant culture and irresistible energy that pulses with Cuban tradition.

Alongside its famed colourful streets, classic cars, and infectious music, Havana is a haven for history buffs with a chronicle to be told around every corner.

A Symbol of History

Plaza de la Revolución Havana - 1

Conceived by the French Urbanist Jean Claude Frostier, is the Plaza de la Revolucion. Located in the heart of the capital, this popular municipality and square spans 72,000 sqm, making it one of the largest in the world. Surrounded by grey administrative buildings, to this day it exists as one of the most politically significant public spaces in Cuba – housing some of the most important offices in Cuba’s governmental bureaucracy.

Designed in the mid-20th Century, the plaza (which was renamed by Fidel Castro) has become a powerful symbol of the Cuban Revolution. A central stage for the country’s modern history, the square is dominated by the famous towering mural of Che Guevara etched with the words “Ever onward to victory”, which sits upon the building of the Ministry of the Interior, just north of the plaza.

A Handful of History

Plaza de la Revolución Havana - 2

Murals of revolutionary heroic figures set the scene in this square with the nearby telecommunications building also boasting a large monument of Camilo Cienfuegos. On the east side of the square is the Jose Marti National Library, which houses an interesting photography exhibition, while to the west is the Cuban National Theatre – so, no matter where you decide to wander, there’s a part of Cuban history and culture to be discovered.

This vast plaza has also played host to many major political rallies, speeches and national celebrations. Visitors can stand in the very spot where iconic speeches have commenced and where, ultimately, the Cuban revolution was publicly shaped. Even if you’re not a history buff, the weight of this plaza’s significance is impossible to miss.

After soaking up the rich symbolism of the plaza itself, why not treat yourself by taking a trip up the towering monument of the Jose Marti Memorial? Panoramic views of Havana await, with a chance to admire the city’s beautiful architecture from a different perspective.

Beyond its historical and political importance, the plaza’s monumental scale and striking architecture make it an unforgettable landmark to visit during your time in Havana. Visitors can expect a powerful insight into Cuba’s modern history and national identity, with symbolism and significance that make it essential for understanding what has shaped the country.

All in all, a visit to the Plaza de la Revolución offers a deeper connection to Cuba’s cultural and political legacy, and is a compelling highlight of Havana’s bustling streets.
