Crowned as the “Jewel of Central America”, Belize is a hidden Caribbean gem that blends laid-back beach life with eco-adventure and luxury coastal retreats with remote tropical hideaways. It may not be as high on your holiday wish list, (yet), as popular neighbours like Mexico, but we’re here to tell you that this subtropical spot is well worth the hype.
We’re uncovering all you need to know about Belize in this comprehensive destination guide, from where to go and what to experience, to its rich ancient heritage. So, whether you like exploring colourful towns, swimming amongst incredible marine life in the famous Great Blue Hole or uncovering centuries of history at various archaeological sites – this land of natural wonders delivers.
The Best Places to Visit in Belize
From the world-famous Great Blue Hole to the ancient Mayan temples of Caracol, Belize offers a diverse landscape unlike anywhere else. However long you plan on visiting, you’ll certainly want to pack as many experiences in as possible – and with a little help from us, doing so will be a breeze.
We’ve rounded up a few day trip ideas for you to consider below, with options fit for thrill-seekers and chill-seekers, alike.

Belize Barrier Reef & Great Blue Hole
Your holiday in Belize isn’t complete without spending time in the limpid waters of the Caribbean, and luckily for you, there’s an abundance of underwater wonders worth packing your snorkel for.
Fringed by the world’s second-largest Barrier Reef, this subtropical destination is a paradise for both snorkelling and island hopping. Boasting UNESCO-listed status, the reef invites guests to immerse themselves in sandy offshore cayes surrounded by rainbow-coloured marine life, sylvan-style adventures with jungle trails, wildlife sanctuaries and beautiful cascading waterfalls.
For diving enthusiasts in particular, a popular spot on the map is the Great Blue Hole. This large marine sinkhole near the centre of Lighthouse Reef stretches almost a thousand feet across and is a near-perfect circle; tropical fish aside, this makes it one of the most sought-after scuba areas on the island.

Into the Jungle
Further inland, rainforests and wildlife adventures await. Thrill-seekers can explore this spectacular destination from all perspectives – soaring above the jungle through lush treetop canopies one moment, then navigating the dark depths of mysterious underground cave systems the next – in true Indiana Jones style.
One of the most significant inland areas to explore is the Cayo District. Centered around the town of San Ignacio, this area is home to beautiful forests, waterfalls, caves, lagoons, tropical wildlife and an abundance of ruins and landmarks such as Cahal Pech, Xunantunich, El Pilar and Caracol – adding a splash of cultural depth amongst the action and adventure. When in Rome, hey.
If you’re into wildlife watching, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is Belize’s largest and most famous nature reserve, sweeping across the eastern slopes of the Maya Mountain. Be sure to pack your binoculars, as you’re likely to spot a host of the region’s awe-inspiring species in their natural habitat, including toucans, black howler monkeys, parrots, jaguars, pumas, brocket deer, and beyond.

Caye Caulker: An Island Paradise
If all that exploration and adventure leaves you eager to experience more of a “Go Slow” lifestyle, the ultimate Caribbean escape awaits at Caye Caulker. Tucked off the mainland of Belize, this tiny island is the epitome of off-grid; its sandy streets and sans traffic provide a laid-back feel where every day is easy and breezy.
This laid-back island is a backpacker’s paradise. Home to a beautiful stretch of coastline, it’s the kind of place where you can spend your days snorkelling in crystal-clear waters and your evenings sipping an ice-cold beer at a traditional overwater palapa. Candy-coloured Caribbean-style houses, lively bars and waterfront restaurants add to its undeniable charm, while the island’s friendly, free-roaming dogs only enhance its relaxed atmosphere.
For those keen to explore further afield, it also serves as a popular hub to some of Belize’s top tourist attractions, including Ambergris Caye and the vibrant marine life of Hol Chan Marine Reserve.
Should you need any more convincing, Caye Caulker even won “Destination of the Year” at the National Tourism Awards.

A Rich History
Belize has a fascinating past sure to please history buffs – and those simply eager to learn more about the destination they’re visiting. You’ve got relics of ancient civilisations in abundance, with a host of archaeological sites and temples ready to uncover.
Among the best landmarks is the Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave (ATM), best-known for its skeletons (spooky!), grab your comfiest shoes and climb the steps at Cayo District’s Xunantunich, or visit Altun Ha, the name given to the ruins of an ancient city in Belize.
The destination’s history extends far beyond its ancient ruins and crumbling sites, though. Shaped by centuries of Maya Civilisation, Spanish exploration and British colonial rule, Belize boasts a rich cultural heritage that can still be appreciated today in its architecture, traditions and diverse communities. Such influences can be experienced through traditional festivals, getting lost in colonial towns and sampling the local cuisine – a tasty reflection of the area’s rich history.

Food For The Soul
Feeling peckish? When you’re not busy delving into history at the ancient ruins or making friends with the jungle’s tropical wildlife, you’ll likely be tucking into some of the area’s local grub. Belizean cuisine offers a vibrant and diverse fusion of Maya, Mestizo, Creole, British, Caribbean, African and Spanish influences (to name a few), so you can expect the food to seriously deliver in the taste department.
Whether you’re eager to explore street food with on-the-go favourites like tacos, panades, and garnaches or slap-up meals in a restaurant with sea views, the quality of food will be second to none. Wondering what’s on the menu? Rice and beans is considered the National Dish of Belize, so you can expect hearty stews made with kidney beans, rice, and coconut milk; while seafood, fry jacks, and johnny cakes are also trademark dishes worth a try.
Luxury or Adventure? Belize Does Both
This Central American jewel delivers relaxation and adventure in equal measure, making it an ideal choice for every type of traveller.
Whether you’re planning a honeymoon, embarking on a solo adventure or whisking the kids away for unforgettable family memories – Belize offers an experience tailored to your travel style. Its versatility knows no bounds, meaning days can be spent diving into action-packed itineraries filled with jungle treks, cave exploration and marine exploration or simply embracing a slower pace – preferably on a pristine beach!
The destination plays host to a collection of luxury retreats – including the barefoot elegance of adults-only Matachica Resort & Spa and exclusive private island sanctuary of Cayo Espanto – while also serving up sustainable living across eco-friendly lodges – equally admired for their upscale comfort, fine dining, and immersive nature experiences among some of the country’s most spectacular settings.
When is The Best Time to Visit Belize?
Belize enjoys a warm, tropical climate year-round, making it an appealing destination whatever the season. However, the dry season – which runs from November to May – is generally considered the best time to visit, bringing sunny skies, lower humidity and ideal conditions for beach holidays, snorkelling and diving along the famous Belize Barrier Reef.
December to April is particularly popular, too, with calm seas and excellent visibility beneath the water. While the green season, from June to October, sees more frequent rainfall, transforming the country’s rainforests into vibrant, emerald landscapes and offering fewer crowds and attractive travel deals.
Visitors should also note that hurricane season officially runs from June to November, with the highest risk typically falling between August and October. It of course comes down to personal preference, but in our opinion, for the best balance of pleasant weather, outdoor adventures and marine activities, the months of January to April are pretty hard to beat…
Why Belize Should Be Your Next Long Haul Escape
A destination of remarkable diversity, Belize is a melting pot of natural beauty, cultural richness, and fascinating history that offers everything from untouched Caribbean beaches to world-class marine reserves, dense jungle landscapes and upscale resorts that sit snug on the white-sand beach. Its compact size makes it easy to explore, but don’t let its scale fool you – it delivers an extraordinary range of experiences, from adrenaline-pumping cave tubing to unparalleled snorkeling and scuba.
Despite its natural beauty and character, Belize remains something of a hidden gem when compared to more commercialised Caribbean destinations – but this only means that visitors are rewarded with a more authentic, uncrowded and personal travel experience. It’s this combination of accessibility, variety and unspoilt charm that makes Belize so unforgettable – and those who are lucky enough to discover it often feel they’ve uncovered one of the region’s best kept secrets.
