As the sun sets, the resort town comes to life with buzzing open-air eateries and vibrant bars dotting the street that runs parallel to the sand.
What to do in Cayo Santa Maria
The beauty of this destination is that you can do as much or as little as you like, with a host of activities and excursions to explore when you are not lazing on the inviting sands in this tropical corner of Cuba. If you like to capture the history and culture of a place, navigate the city of Santa Clara (capital of the Villa Clara province) where you can tour some of the country’s rich history after it played host to much of the Cuban Revolution’s fighting. You can also find lively nightlife here, one of Cuba’s largest universities, Marta Abreu, and a Cuban Cigar Factory where you can admire workers rolling by hand. There is also a quaint fishing village named Caibarien in Villa Cala where you can watch the boats, marvel over a classic collection of locomotives, and devour delicious seafood at the many restaurants.
If you’re a fan of Che Guevara, a visit to the Plaza de la Revolucion is recommended – this open space is overlooked by a towering bronze statue of the revolutionary leader, which sits atop the museum and mausoleum. Make time to browse the exhibits and memorabilia in the museum while you are here, or perhaps you simply want to wander this typical Cuban city and soak up the sights and sounds without an itinerary or agenda – in which case, Parque Vidal is the perfect space to do so. Centrally located, this town square boasts a lively atmosphere with a mixture of colonial and neo-colonial buildings to admire, not to mention a host of shops to mooch at the popular Calle Independencia, a street located just one block away.
Guided tours
While some tourists won’t mind getting lost in this fascinating city, others may prefer to follow a guide, which is equally possible when you book a guided walking tour with a Cuban local. Learn all there is to know about the country’s history and get a taste for local life as you pass colonial towns, interesting street art, and grand architecture – with an all-important mojito break thrown in, too! Equally, for 360° views of the city, head for Loma del Capiro Viewpoint.
