The history of the Inglaterra hotel: a timeline
1863: The building was built within the walled city at the time (to protect the town from pirates.) Known initially as Café Escauriza and then renamed Café Louvre, it led to the most famous street of Louvre, which was a pivotal spot in the history of the Cuban capital. In fact, this is where Cuban patriots are said to have met to conspire against colonial rule.
1877: The Café changed ownership into a Le Grand Hotel and restaurant. It was known as the Hotel Inglaterra building, and during this year, they added an additional third floor. It was fast becoming one of the best hotels in the world.
1901: They added electric lights, telephones, and telegraph communications to all countries. These additions were revolutionary, and it earnt its reputation as the best Latin American hotel and even one of the best hotels in the world.
1931: The beautiful Inglaterra hotel closed its doors due to the world economic crisis.
1939: the Inglaterra hotel re-opened for events only.
1973: The Inglaterra hotel shut once more.
1989: The Inglaterra hotel was too iconic to let go, received an extensive restoration process, and opened its doors to the public once more.
The Inglaterra hotel has seen many famous faces grace its floors, such as Winston Churchill. And has even been used in several literature pieces such as Cuba Libre and Dreaming in Cuban. The popularity and history of the hotel meant it was declared a National Monument in 1981.

The Inglaterra hotel is incredibly grand, with spectacular stain-glass windows, intricate ceilings and elegant interiors. The lobby is incredibly luxurious, with Morrocan influence, such as an arabesque arch and classic green, blue and gold tiles. The lavish gold statues are like the Spanish dancer La Sevillana, after whom the bar is named. The roof terrace is perfect for chilled evenings, with sun loungers, a bar with live music and the most sensational views.
Today it is still a thriving hotel will lively traditional music playing and guests flocking to the hotel to be entertained.
