Sheltered away in the southeastern province of Granma, located near the Gulf of Guacanayabo, Manzanillo is an authentic municipality, seemingly untouched by the hands of time. Cuba’s hidden gem, it’s a destination where rich history effortlessly merges with beautiful landscapes, while its vibrant culture and local charm invite visitors to experience the real Cuba.
This fairly pedestrian city is renowned for its charming neoclassical buildings, with richly decorated crescents and tile mosaics dating back to the 1910 and 20s – the majority of which can be admired in the central Parque Céspedes. Whilst you’re here, marvel over the Glorieta (gazebo), an imitation of the Patio de los Leones in Spain’s Alhambra that towers over the square.
Ten kilometres south of Manzanillo, you’ll discover the enchanting former sugar plantation of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the Father of the Cuban Nation, who ignited the first cry for independence against Spanish rule in 1868. The small museum of Museo Historico La Demajagua (built in 1968) provides a profound sense of Cuba’s long struggle for freedom, with highlights including the first Cuban flag (hand-sewn by Céspedes’ mistress), remnants of the sugar mill machinery, plus the Demajagua bell – which Céspedes used to announce the (unofficial) start of the Independence and summon his slaves to freedom. Rumour has it, a then “unknown” Fidel Castro stole the bell and took it to Havana in a publicity stunt to rebel against the corrupt Cuban government.
But there’s much more to the destination than its historical significance. Nature lovers will be in their element too, since the city serves as a gateway to the breathtakingly beautiful Desembarco del Granma National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lace up your boots and hike through its scenic trails, discovering hidden caves, mesmerising waterfalls, and its diverse flora and fauna as you go. All this, set against the enchanting backdrop of the Sierra Maestra mountains.
Lush forests aside, when you’re wandering the cobbled streets you can expect to hear the toe-tapping rhythms of Cuban Son (the forefather of salsa) pulsating from every corner. Famous for its love of music and dance, you’ll pass a fair share of street organs, which are preserved in the city from the 20th century, while the Manzanillo Original Orchestra is also on hand to play traditional music.
Speaking of music, Manzanillo is a city of festivities and celebrations, so it’s worth trying to plan your visit during the city’s captivating carnivals, usually held in July, when the streets come alive with music, dance, parades and colour.
So, whether you’re a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or simply looking for an authentic Cuban experience, Manzanillo is an attractive place to tick off on your Cuba travel itinerary. Off the beaten path, the city offers a rich and unfiltered view of Cuba sure to leave lasting memories for all who visit.
