The capital city of the province that bears the same name, Pinar Del Río is situated on the Guamá River, close to the base of Sierra de los Órganos. Visitors to the region can expect a very different pace of life here in comparison to the tourist destinations of Varadero and Havana; everything is very laid-back, which is incredibly fitting when you consider the city’s location.
Pinar Del Río plays host to some of Cuba’s most dramatic and picturesque landscapes, including the famous Vinales Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best tobacco growing regions in the world. So, if you’re visiting this corner of the Caribbean Isle, you’ll never run out of things to do.
Whether you want to learn about the history of cigar-making, admire the awe-inspiring natural scenery, visit museums, marvel over ornate cathedrals, soak up the views on horseback, or simply relax on the beach – this western province has something for everyone.
Vinales Valley is one of the most sought-after spots in the surrounding area; fringed by rounded mountains, otherwise known as Mogotes, there are plenty of climbing opportunities to be had for the most magnificent views across the sweeping valley. Nature lovers can keep their eyes peeled, as you’ll find over 60 species of vegetation waiting to be discovered, or why not take a guided tour of the Cueva del Indio, instead?

The Francisco Donatien Cigar Factory is another pastime (particularly if you’re partial to a puff or two), as you can learn about the step-by-step production process of rolling tobacco leaves. This authentic process is traditionally (and famously) hand crafted in Cuba, which makes for a fascinating tutorial. Similarly, if you want to explore further there are a few tobacco plantations that can be visited nearby – why not make an afternoon of it?
Consider yourself a history buff? Head to the Provincial Museum of Pinar Del Río to learn about the evolution of the region, from its rich history to modern day. You can admire a collection of heritage objects here, from ancient glassware to weapons from the War of Independence, art, and beyond.
You can’t visit this Caribbean gem without visiting one of its iconic golden stretches of sand, and lucky for you, there are a couple of notable spots in Pinar Del Río. Cayo Levisa is a great family beach for its crystal-clear waters and tasty restaurants that fringe the sands, while Cayo Jutías is one of the most popular beaches for its vast array of marine life, particularly starfish.

All this exploration will surely have your stomach’s rumbling. Well, you’re in for a treat, because the local food is seriously delicious here. Often, the area’s restaurants and guest houses provide farm to table food, all of which has been grown nearby – that’s juicy fruit, vegetables, and even meat is source from the farm. Even the coffee is organic, since it’s locally grown and roasted right here in Pinar Del Río, so prepare to return home wanting to upgrade your morning fix!
