Playa Larga has played a vital role in the modern history of Cuba. This quaint fishing village is nestled on the coast and boasts a beautiful beach, which (rather refreshingly) isn’t fronted by a string of towering luxury resorts like many other beach resort destinations. Instead, it’s lined with swaying palms, and you’ll find that many of the locals have converted their homes into accommodation with atmospheric terrace bars, maintaining the town’s authentic laid-back vibe.
Wildlife and Nature in Playa Larga
Located at the South of Bahia Guama, this beach destination is approximately 13 kilometres of Bahia de Cochinos – a favourite amongst divers, ecotourism lovers and Cuban history aficionados. Nature lovers will also be in their element since Playa Larga is the gateway to the Cienaga de Zapta National Park – a scenic ecosystem of wetlands, mangroves, forests, swamp flood caves, coral reefs and more, so be prepared for some spectacular wildlife encounters. When you’re not busy birdwatching, Playa Larga has some fantastic aqua-based activities for those who like to make a splash; head to the Bay of Pigs for brilliant snorkelling and diving, where you can swim amid a mass of tropical fish around the offshore coral reefs or check out a couple of mysterious sunken ships! Nearby you’ll also find Cueva de los Peces, a gorgeous natural 70m-deep cenote with crystalline waters full of multicoloured fish – it’s a paradise for snorkel enthusiasts.
The Beaches of Playa Larga
If you prefer to soak up the sunshine on dry land, Playa Caleton beach is a blissful golden stretch that’s popular for just that. Nestled amidst the palm trees and sun loungers you’ll find a few beach bars and restaurants that are ideal for midday refreshments. Equally, there are two other inviting pockets of sand on the other side of town (both aptly named Playa Larga), so you won’t be short of places to lay your towel down. If you’re looking for a faster pace, swap laid-back beach life for a stint in the city – the vicinity’s largest in fact – at Cienfuegos. This colonial city is nicknamed the Pearl of the South and features a treasure trove of ornate neoclassical architecture sure to impress the history buffs among us. Head to the popular central square and UNESCO Heritage certified Parque José Martí, where you’ll find the iconic Tomás Terry Theater (complete with golf-leaf mosaics and ceiling frescoes), in addition to monuments including Jagua Fort and Cienfuegos Cathedral. The nearby Botanical Garden is also pleasant to wander with over 2000 different species of tropical plants, or why not grab your bags and meander the bustling shopping street? Finish the day at one of the fantastic eateries and bars around Punta Gorda.
