Santa Clara is the capital of the central Cuban province Villa Clara and a must visit destination for those with a keen interested in Cuba’s history. This pocket-sized corner of the isle is renowned for its colonialism and revolutionary history, since it’s where the last battle of the revolution was fought, meaning the city is full of iconic landmarks worth admiring – including the Che Guevara Mausoleum. In fact, it won’t take you long to realise that you can’t move for statues dedicated to the famous guerrilla here, presenting Santa Clara with the honourable nickname ‘Che’s city’.
Many of the best things to do in Santa Clara can be covered in just one day, even if you’re the type to have an itinerary as long as your arm! If you’re not sure where to start, a guided walking tour with a local is a great way to learn about the area’s rich history and what daily life looks like. Or, if you prefer to take yourself on a leisurely stroll and admire the sights as you go, head for Parque Leoncio Vidal – the city’s main plaza is buzzing with activity, fringed by restaurants, bars, and the neoclassical Jose Marti Library. You can expect to see locals engaging in games of chess, friendly catch ups, family picnics, and live music performers here.
If architecture is your thing, visit the beautifully preserved Teatro la Caridad, Santa Clara’s (and one of Cuba’s only remaining) old colonial theatres, dating back to 1885. Just as awe-inspiring as the building’s exterior is its delicate interior, featuring ornate furnishings, intricately painted ceilings, and a gorgeous gallery that still hosts regular ballet shows today.
From music to murals, another Che Guevara highlight in the city is the Tren Blindado monument and museum, a landmark which honours the exact place where Che and his men derailed an armoured railway train during the Battle of Santa Clara, 1958. It’s worth embarking on a tour guide whilst you’re here to understand the history of this site, before browsing the historical and art exhibits in the freight cars.
Whether your visit during the day or once evening rolls around, time spent at El Mejunje is a must for all ages. This popular LGBTQ friendly nightclub doused in urban graffiti is a hive of activity no matter what the hour, playing host to lively drag shows, senior citizen salsa dancing, exciting kid’s theatre performances, magicians, the Miss Transvestite Beauty Pageant, and much more – you really will find something for everybody in this roofless, run-down looking building. Want to go out with a bang? Finish your day of exploration in one of the city’s best restaurants, The Florida, where you can indulge in a romantic dinner set amid a candlelit courtyard full of unique antiques and plants. Or, for something less fancy, head to an intimate eatery named El Alba (near Parque Leoncio Vidal), a popular haunt where you can fully immerse yourself in the local culture and fabulous food.
