If you’re a fan of cultural festivals, you won’t want to miss out on Labour Day celebrations in the bustling heart of Cuba’s capital.
As you know, May Day (1st May) is an annual holiday that’s widely celebrated by many of the world’s nations in order to honour the achievements of workers – and it’s no different for Cuba May Day. In fact, it’s a pretty big deal there.
You wouldn’t have thought that Havana could get any more atmospheric, right? Well, that’s until you witness the Cuba May Day celebrations in the city’s famous Revolution Square.
Over a million (yep, it’s a lot) of Cuban workers travel from all corners of this Caribbean island to join in with the colourful parade that spills through the Cadillac-lined streets and 72,000 square meters, and you know what? Not an inch of ground is uncovered. Throughout the day, you’ll find people dressed in red t-shirts waving flags and banners, a host of cultural and musical events that see people dancing to reggae on the pavements, bustling food and drink stalls, speeches from leading figures held underneath the Jose Marti monument, and so much more – but, most of all, a unanimous sense of joy and pride. Listen out for shouts of “Viva Cuba” and “Revolucion!”, from the tens of thousands of workers who shuffle towards Plaza de la Revolucion, where the parade ends underneath the iconic Che mural, celebrations to mark this day are also held throughout the country including Santa Clara home of Che Guevara’s mausoleum.
When planning your next holiday, consider planning it over Cuba May Day.
